This Week at CEI

The world’s leading voices in global education, including Results for Development (R4D) Managing Director, Nicholas Burnett, met last week in Qatar for the 2015 World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE). Burnett moderated a session organized by Education Above All to discuss “Current Education Financing Mechanisms and Promising Options”. Julia Gillard, Board Chair of the Global Partnership for Education, as well as representatives from UNESCO, the Norwegian Refugee Council, and International Rescue Committee spoke at the session about the persistent challenges to education financing. CEI Program Director, Donika Dimovska also participated this week in UNICEF’s Global Innovations for Children and Youth Summit. The meeting, held in Helsinki, convened over 500 participants to “unlock the way new technologies can drive change for the world’s most vulnerable children.” Dimovska, along with fellow R4D staffers Thomas Feeny and Catherine Sylvester, led a plenary entitled: “Proof -- or Persuasion? Playing the Agile Innovation Game”. The unorthodox Shark Tank/Dragon’s Den style session saw two different innovation pitches compete for funding, with the audience playing the role of the funders. The game highlighted useful strategies for innovations seeking investors, and proved to be one of the summit’s most popular sessions that week! Last week on the CEI blog, we published a guest post from Soha Sudtharalingam recapping her recent trip to Kenya for her work with the Girls’ Education Challenge. She visited a project run by Leonard Cheshire Disability that works with local communities to help girls with disabilities enroll in school. The program addresses barriers that prevent disabled girls from pursuing education such as parents’ perceptions, teacher-training shortcomings, and lack of necessary resources. Sudtharalingam reports that the program has driven an overwhelmingly positive change in attitudes in local communities about education for these marginalized girls, and identifies a number of useful strategies that may help similar initiatives throughout the world.

In the News

Vicki Phillips takes note of the growing number of digital instructional tools available for teachers, school leaders, parents and more in her latest post to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s education blog, Impatient Optimists. Phillips previews an upcoming report by the Gates Foundation, which she writes will “strengthen our understanding about how teachers perceive and use digital tools”. Earlier this month Mercedes Miguel looked at how Buenos Aires adapted to provide more relevant secondary education to its adolescent youth. The initiative relies on developing education assessment capacity and using that data to understand what is worth learning, how can it be taught, and how can we continue to measure progress? The article identifies seven domains of learning emphasized in the model, as well as much more detail about the accomplishments of the Argentine capital.

Naki B. Mendoza provides a helpful overview of the increasingly vital worlds of private equity and development finance. Private equity will play a significant role in funding the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and the article from Devex’s Impact Blog looks at several important factors driving the growing impact in developing markets.
