ukuFUNda is an e-learning application that emerged from a partnership between UNICEF South Africa, the South African Department of Basic Education, and the mobile service provider Mxit. ukuFUNda aims to facilitate equitable learning opportunities for children through mobile technology. Mxit works across platforms such as laptops and desktops and on both hi-fi and lo-fi mobiles. Innovative learning games and tutorial support are available to both educators and students at the touch of a button. This technology applied to learning support is still underutilized in South Africa, despite its ability to reach a critical mass of young people. The UNICEF South Africa Country Office is working with the South Africa Department of Basic Education to use this technology to reach more than 6 million children in the worst-performing districts. The goal is to include 9,000 schools, to improve literacy and numeracy performance, and to enhance teachers’ content knowledge and confidence.
