Muralidharan, Karthik; Prakash, NishithInternational Growth Center (IGC)e Department of Education, Government of Bihar2013

This paper is an impact evaluation of an innovative program in the Indian State of Bihar where bicycles were provided to girls to reduce the gender gap in secondary school enrollment rates. By employing a triple difference approach that uses boys and a neighoboring state for comparison, it was observed that the bicycles proved more cost effective than conditional cash transfer programs and also increased girls' age-appropriate enrollment in secondary school.
