Generating skilled self-employment in developing countries: Experimental evidence from Uganda

Economists cite the need for capital in addition to skills training for unemployed youth, but the evidence base for giving cash to the poor and unemployed is weak, particularly for unsupervised cash grants. This large, randomized control trial found promising results for an unconditional cash transfer program in northern Uganda. After four years, half of the treatment group practiced a skill trade. Relative to the control group, they significantly increased business assets, working hours, and earnings.
