Savings Groups and Educational Investment

Ananga, Eric; Cameron, StuartPlan UKUK Department for International Development (DFID)2013

This report explores how small savings groups, or Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA), affect investments in education and results. In addition to a more inclusive, global literature review, Plan UK also conducted small-scale field research in two villages in Ghana. While the impact of savings groups differs across countries and contexts, the report concludes that there are no negative effects and some savings groups have significant, positive effects. More research is needed to determine the effect of savings groups on education for child laborers.
