State of School Feeding Worldwide 2013 is the first in a series of comprehensive reports intended to strengthen the evidence base on school feeding. This report draws information from a WFP global school feeding survey administered in 2012, country case studies, and a literature review. By looking at the type of programs implemented, their coverage and efficiency, costs per student, and comparisons among low, middle, and upper income countries, the report is able to conclude:
  • school feeding programs can be found in nearly every country around the world, but vary widely in their efficiency and coverage
  • programs are linked with national income and thus have less of a presence in high-need countries
  • school meal programs that are tied to local agriculture demonstrate economic benefits
  • there is a need for improved coordination among development partners
