Vocational education in South Africa: strategies for improvement

Stumpf, Rolf; Niebuhr, GustavCentre for Development and Enterprise2012

This report summarizes what needs to be come to strengthen vocationally-oriented education in South Africa, where students who are exposed to technical fields need further post-school training before they can enter the labor market. Currently, many students leave vocational programs unprepared, and are left under-educated and unemployed. In the light of South Africa's critical need for technical and artisan skills, plus the apartheid legacy that stigmatized vocational education, the research indicates that the country should develop a policy framework for making vocationally-oriented education a much more attractive option within a system of diversified education provision.
